What is national protected technology? Technology specified by law as subject to assessment and protective measures, e.g. national core technology, strategic material technology (including nuclear-exclusive technology), and defense industry technology
Classification Details
1. Self-assessment and professional assessment of national core technology
  • Determine whether an international joint research project is related to “national core technology” as specified in Article 2 (2) of Act on Prevention of Divulgence and Protection of Industrial Technology
  • “National core technology” assessment is based on ① self-assessment in comparison with the provided list, or ② professional assessment requested by the Research Security Team to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy
2. Professional assessment of strategic material technology
  • Determine whether an international joint research project is related to “strategic material” or “strategic technology” subject to import permission and other restrictions in accordance with Article 19 (1) of the Foreign Trade Act
  • Projects recognized as involving strategic material technology based on 15-day professional assessment conducted by the Korean Security Agency Of Trade And Industry as requested by the Research Security Team
3. Professional assessment of nuclear technology
  • Determine whether research is related to “nuclear-exclusive item” or “nuclear-exclusive technology,” such as nuclear materials, facilities and equipment created solely for nuclear purposes from among strategic material technology subject to import permission and other restrictions in accordance with Article 19 (1) of the Foreign Trade Act
  • Professional assessment requested to Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control for 15 days if international joint research field falls under ‘nuclear’
4. Self-assessment and professional assessment of defense industry technology
  • Determine whether R&D project is related to “defense industry technology” as declared in the public notice on designation of defense industry technology by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration
  • “Defense industry technology” assessment is based on ① self-assessment in comparison with the provided list, or ② professional assessment requested by the Research Security Team to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration
